Distinguished and Famous people from Bacchus Marsh
Bacchus Marsh is the birthplace of a novelist whose fiction returned to the town and a soldier recognised for courage during the First World War. Their careers followed very different paths from the same Victorian starting point.
📚 Peter Carey
Peter Carey was born in Bacchus Marsh in 1943 and attended the local state school before boarding at Geelong Grammar. He worked in advertising while writing fiction, publishing the short-story collection The Fat Man in History in 1974. His novels include Oscar and Lucinda, a Booker Prize winner. Bacchus Marsh later became a setting in A Long Way from Home, bringing the town and its motoring world back into a literary career that had travelled overseas.
🎖️ Rupert “Mick” Moon VC
Rupert “Mick” Moon was born in Bacchus Marsh and grew up in Gippsland. He worked as a bank clerk before wartime service, later becoming an officer in the 58th Battalion. He received the Victoria Cross for his actions near Bullecourt in France in May 1917, where he continued leading despite repeated wounds. His career connects a Victorian country birthplace with the Australian Imperial Force's fighting on the Western Front.
📖 Frank Hardy
Frank Hardy grew up at Bacchus Marsh and attended St Bernard’s Catholic primary school. His early working life included shops, a milk factory and farms, while he drew cartoons for the local newspaper. His father’s gift for spinning yarns helped shape an approach to storytelling that later mixed observed lives with invention. Hardy became best known for Power Without Glory, a novel whose publication led to a criminal-libel trial and an acquittal. Bacchus Marsh supplies schooling, work and a family storytelling tradition, grounding the later literary and political career in an upbringing considerably less grand than the public controversies it eventually produced.
